Women's Place In Advertising Women in Advertising Stereotypes in America have existed for hundreds of years. They were present before the Internet, television, radio, and even magazines. This is not to say that these newer media devices do not contribute to the overwhelming prevalence of racism, sexism, and stereotyping. Typecasting occurs regularly in society, for men, and especially women. Advertisers are the single largest contributor to the continuation of female degradation and sexual bias in our society. Advertising plays a tremendous role in promoting labels. Direct marketing techniques demand that people be placed in certain specific groups. The more defined a group is the better for the advertisers. Their goal is to create a situation where an entire group of people feel the same way, think the same way, and most importantly shop the same way. In the ads that I have found there seem to be three main types. The female body displayed as a sexual object; todays ads have created a society where the Kate Mosses of the world epitomize beauty. It is these types of ads that are responsible for the 80% of school girls watching their weight (Kilbourne). These second type exhibits the housewife who is nurturing, caring, older, and unsexual. These ads feature women as competent only cleaning, cooking, and taking care of children. The final type is the empowered female, in control, young, and attractive. It is only the third type of ad, which occurred much less frequently that empowered and r ecognized women as equal to men. It is necessary that advertisers change their assessment of women. Women are more than sex objects and housewives; moreover, they constitute half of the consumers in the country. With a change in advertising policies companies will serve dual purposes, their sales to women will increase and, girls will have an opportunity to feel good about themselves, their bodies, and who they are. Traditionally women in media have filled only one role in American society, the housewife. Only recently did she expand to also include the sex object. Through mass media advertisers sell beauty; they create an unattainable ideal woman, compelling other women to attempt to transform themselves into the model. Advertisers make it clear that their products have the ability to complete that transformation. In my research over half the ads in multiple magazines treated women as sex objects. Scantily clad, sexy, beautiful women drape themselves over a bottle of perfume, a bouquet of flowers, or shaving cream. In ad numbered #1 there is a perfect woman caressing herself after getting out of the shower. Her body and hair are impeccable, a satisfied sexual look on her face. The sexual implications are also evident, Seduce your senses, Silken your skin Its a sensual experience like never before. This ad is telling readers that they will be more attractive if they use this particular brand of soap. A hall-mate of mine described the ad by saying If I use that soap I will be a beautiful babe. The ad scheme and the product have no relation whatsoever; soap has nothing to do with beauty or sex. They simply chose a beautiful, satisfied looking woman to use their soap. The 2nd ad shows a tall, thin, gorgeous model. She is in the 5% of women in the world with that particular type of body build. The ad is very clear in revealing its message; these clothes you will look more like this model. You will give off the sex appeal that she radiates, her eyes, stance, and even the pole she is resting on all are very sexual yet completely unrelated to the pants that are being advertised. Every ad that I collected that featured a woman was beautiful. There are no blemishes, pimples, or love handles; every woman has perfect hair, perfect breasts, and perfect arms, the definition of beauty in our culture. These are the women that create the negative, unhealthy, unsafe images in young girls minds. It is not surprising that girls rarely feel adequate during their emotional teenage years when they are forced to compare themselves to airbrushed, made-up models. Stephen Crane, (1871-1900), was an American novelist and poet, one of the first American writers of the naturalistic style of writing, Crane is known for his pessimistic and often brutal portrayals of the human condition, but his stark realism is relieved by poetic charm and a sympathetic understanding of character. Direct an act from Hamlet

I have selected Act 1 of Hamlet for my project. I do not wish to change any details in the original script itself but I would be approaching the script as a screenplay for a movie as I think that popular culture would benefit greatly from this Shakespearean classic. This means that my target audience would mainly be today’s youth. My approach would be somewhat similar to Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet in 1996 which starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes.The main difference is that I would like preserve another facet of Shakespeare’s old plays as they were performed during his time, and that is to have all the parts played by men. I believe that this would add novelty to the movie as this has yet to be done by any version of any Shakespearean play created for the cinema. Also, I think it would add a measure of academic value to the film, which is it would get a lot of attention from people who would inevitably want to relate the novelty to some social issue l ike gender which would definitely increase media mileage.Act 1 of Hamlet has five main characters. These are King Hamlet (The Ghost): the late king of Denmark who had died two months ago, King Claudius: the late King Hamlet’s brother and successor, Queen Gertrude: widow of King Hamlet and remarried to Claudius following her husband’s demise, Prince Hamlet: a young college student who is the son of Gertrude and the late King Hamlet, and Horatio: Hamlet's best friend. For the starring role of Prince Hamlet, I will choose Matt Damon. Although he’s 36 years old, Matt can easily be made to look like he’s in his late 20s.He is best known for his starring role as Jason Bourne, an amnesiac assassin on the run in The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy. I think that Damon’s dark persona that is incorporated in these two movies would play quite well for the part of Hamlet especially in his broodings regarding his father’s death. Matt’s ste rn disposition is also appropriate in his unflinching dialogue with the ghost of his father towards the end of the act. I want Hamlet to be strong, a bit dark and brooding, almost unkind. For the ghost of King Hamlet, I’ve selected Anthony Hopkins.Hopkins has starred in the Hannibal Lecter series of movies from Silence of the Lambs in 1991 to Hannibal in 2001. His role was that of a deranged but brilliant surgeon who is a known and convicted murderer and cannibal. Hopkins also starred in the now classic Bram Stoker’s Dracula in 1992. Hopkins’ roles in these movies showed his capability for a cunning, merciless character that is what is needed for the part of the ghost of King Hamlet. I want the ghost to show utterly no remorse for what it would ask Hamlet to do. I want Hopkins’ imposing stare in digital ghostly fog effects that could scare an audience silly.I also want a synergy of dark characters between him and Damon. I want the audience to see this dar k demeanor as a resemblance from father to son. For Hamlet’s mother, Queen Gertude, I want to use an actor who is a lot younger than either Hopkins or the actor who is to play King Claudius. Also, since I will be using a man to play Queen Gertrude, I find it necessary to pick one who has done the task several times before. Unfortunately, there seems to be no available actor in Hollywood to perform such a role. This leads me to seek out someone outside of tinsel town. Doing so found me the perfect specimen in the Philippines.He is Eric Quizon. He is a Filipino actor in his mid-forties who has played the role of a beautiful gay man several times in their local cinema. He has even played one in an internationally acclaimed movie in 2000 about the Japanese occupation in his country during World War II which was entitled, Markova: Comfort Gay. Quizon has an excellent command of English and does look like a beautiful gay man so there would be no problem fitting him in as Queen Gert rude. He has also been nominated for several acting awards in his country and had even more a number of supporting actor awards in 1995 and 1998 so his acting is also pretty decent.I want Gertrude to look beautiful. I want the audience who know she isn’t really a woman to gape in awe at how much she looks like one without any major make up or computer alterations. Plus I want people who do not know that she is a man to be struck silly when they find out. For King Claudius, I’ve selected Brian Cox. He’s a 60 year old veteran who’s played supporting roles in a lot of action films such as Desparate Measures, Manhunter, and Troy where he superbly played another villain, Agamemnon.I also chose Cox because he has previously worked both with Damon and with Hopkins in The Bourne Supremacy and Hannibal respectively. I believe that this would make him serve as a bridge between the two actors in the early stages of filming. I want King Claudius to seem just as ruthl ess and cunning as his brother, and I think using someone who has played one of the most ruthless kings in classic literature is just the ticket. Finally, I want Jack Black to play Horatio. You just need to King Kong or The Jackal to know that this guy can keep a straight face but at the same time come off as funny looking to the audience.I mean, I actually laughed a little when Bruce Willis’ psychotic character blew a crying Jack Black to bits in the second mentioned movie. I want that seriousness to leave a smile on the audience. I want them to ask â€Å"Is he serious? Or is he going to pull a rabbit out of his ass before he says another word? †. The setting would be in modern day Denmark, where Hamlet’s father would actually be a big time tycoon. All the modern day details similar to Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet would apply to this film. I want the audience to be able to connect with the movie and at the same time appreciate how it was done in the old d ays.

Music of Cuba and Puerto Rico: A Comparison and Contrast Essay

Music is an important aspect of both the Cuban and Puerto Rican cultures because music forms part of everyday life. To the people in these countries, music is a way of expressing unity and belongingness. The European explorers, particularly the Spanish, who came to Cuba and Puerto Rico (Thompson, 1991) enriched music in both countries. The music in these countries also became rich because of the influence of African slaves in the plantations (Sublette, 2004) who eventually become part of the community after slavery ended. The fusion of these influences made community life and music more interesting. Type of Music The type of music in both Cuba and Puerto Rico evolved from the Spanish and African influences but the extent of influence differed. African percussion dance music has a stronger influence on Cuban music while Spanish classical and folk dance music had a stronger influence on Puerto Rican music. In addition, Puerto Rican music also borrowed much from Cuban music and music of the native Indians (Manuel, Bilb & Largey, 2006). The single strong influence on Cuban Music and the more diverse influence on Puerto Rican music explained the similarities and differences in the type of music. The similar types of dance music in Cuba and Puerto Rico are son, salsa, mambo, and danzones (Manuel, Bilb & Largey, 2006). The differences in the type of music include the livelier Spanish inspired bolero and zapateo in Cuba and the more laid back Spanish inspired narrative plena and folk dance music decima and seis in Puerto Rico. Another difference is the African inspired dance music rumba of Cuba utilizing only narration and percussion and the African inspired dance music bomba of Puerto Rico that utilized narration, percussion and other instruments such as the maracas. Sound The result of the combination of African, Spanish and indigenous culture led to diverse and enduring rich music. However, Cuban music has retained its original strong African percussion influence by findings its own path after the Spanish colonization ended while Puerto Rican music diversified further with the American influence. Cuba retained the traditional rhythms changing only with the use of modern instruments while Puerto Rican music further evolved into jazz, rock, rap and reggae (Manuel, Bilb & Largey, 2006) using modern beats and instruments. Separation of historical development and modernization led to the divergence of music in these countries. Lyrics The lyrics of music in Cuba and Puerto Rico commonly focused on love and passion, courage and nationalism, and family and parental devotion (Manuel, Bilb & Largey, 2006). Cuba and Puerto Rico experienced African and Spanish influences on music lyrics. The African influence is more on call-response lyrics with a leader singing a call and the listeners responding to the call. The Spanish influence refers to the arrangement of words and phrases in artistic form such as in love songs and the national anthems of both countries. However, revolutionary lyrics are more pervasive in Cuba since its national anthem is a call to battle while the national anthem in Puerto Rico is a celebration of independence. Musical Instruments There are three basic musical instruments common in Cuba and Puerto Rico, which are different types of percussion or drums, guitar or lute, and sticks tapped together (Thompson, 1991; Sublette, 2004). The difference is the widespread use of bass instruments and trumpets in Cuba that accompanied marches and dances and the more common use of flute and other indigenous musical instruments in Puerto Rico. Religious Influences Religion is a strong influence in the development of music of both Cuba and Puerto Rico but the influences differed. African god worship using percussion music strongly influenced Cuban music while Spanish catholic prayer chants strongly influence Puerto Rican music. In Cuba, Santeria emerged as a religion combining the indigenous god worship and Nigerian god worship (Manuel, Bilb & Largey, 2006). With the Catholic influence, the saints had counterparts with the gods based on similar characteristics and worshipped similar to African gods.
